February is the time when LOVE and relationships are emphasized. I can’t testify that I’ve always been admirer of Valentine’s season BUT any chance for our culture to take a moment to reflect on the meaning of love, qualities of love, and more love in our world is a good thing. It starts with each of us, and our relationship with ourselves. Self-love is a vital practice. If self-love is an elusive quality for you there are some simple techniques you can use to heal that rift and connect to your heart center.
Beyond our immediate self, self-love is fundamental to all partnerships. Healthy relationships with romantic partners, family members, colleagues, friends...all require loving ourselves fully first. To me this means learning to love and embrace the parts of ourselves we might not like. The journey to self-love requires acceptance and integration. When you love yourself entirely more love will flow from and to you, you will receive and be supported in new ways.
Recommended Mantra: Mera Man Lochai
You can start with cat/cows, or breathing exercises, to prepare yourself for meditation.
1. Sit comfortably with a tall spine. Right hand above your head, palm facing down. Left arm bent, with palm facing forward. Eyes are closed but looking at the chin. Breath is long and slow (Inhale 20 seconds – Hold 20 sec. – Exhale 20 sec.) 3-11 minutes
2. Actively stretch both arms out straight, shoulder height, palms face down. Eyes are closed but looking at the chin. Breath is long and slow. 3 minutes
3. Stretch both arms straight up, palms face forward. Eyes are closed but looking at the chin. Breath is long and slow. 3 minutes
To finish: Inhale, STRETCH UP, hold the breath 10 seconds, exhale << Do this part 2 more times.
Relax. Meditate on all the ways you love yourself. Quietly list them and feel each one pass through your heart center.
